Seeing God
From a sermon on James 1:17–
God is arrayed with an infinite brightness, a brightness that doesn’t create pain as the light of the sun pains the eyes to behold it, but rather fills with excess of joy and delight. Indeed, no man can see God and live, because the sight of such glory would overpower nature, . . . ’tis because the joy and pleasure in beholding would be too strong for a frail nature.
According to Edwards, it isn’t God’s holiness that would incinerate us. It’s the joy that would erupt within us that we can’t handle.
Yet.

Freedom in Christ
Here is a great quote from a pastor named Jared Wilson:
“Yes, people watch too much TV and play too many video games and spend too much time on the Internet and what-have-you. But the proper response to our media over-saturation is not a rigorous attention to the explicitly “spiritual” in every margin of life. Be a Christian, not an ascetic. Don’t be lazy, but realize that Jesus Christ did not die and rise for you so that you would stress out about whether you’re being spiritual enough. So take a nap. Watch some television. The gospel frees you to chill the heck out.”
Amen to that – “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Gal. 5:1)
Welcome
Welcome to the Grace Community Church blog!
It is our desire that this be a forum for encouragement in the gospel, equipping the saints for the work of ministry, and engaging both the heart and the mind with the great truths and doctrines of Scripture.
Future blog posts will include series through our foundational documents, beginning with our mission statement, and including our Statement of Faith and Church Covenant. Also, we will periodically post links to helpful and challenging articles and websites, as well as short devotional posts from a particular passage of Scripture. Another feature will be monthly (approximately) reviews of books we have read recently.
Grace and peace,
