Salvation

Introduction (Major Themes)

Notes

This series begins with a discussion of some of the overarching themes of salvation in the Bible: the relation of salvation to the creation, the sovereignty of God in salvation, and salvation's three tenses.

Salvation Planned: Election

Notes

God's plan of salvation begins from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:3-6; Romans 9:1-26).

Salvation Accomplished and Secured:
The Atoning Work of Christ

Death of Christ Notes

Resurrection and Ascension Notes

Jesus accomplishes and secures the salvation planned from before the foundation of the world by dying a sacrificial death once for all (Romans 3:21-26; Leviticus 16; Hebrews 9).

Jesus' resurrection and ascension are essential in finishing and securing the redemption he purchased on the cross (1 Corinthians 15; Romans 1:1-6; Acts 1:6-11; John 16:4-11).

Salvation Applied:
Effectual Calling, New Birth, and
Repentance-Faith

Notes

Notes (Part 2)

The Holy Spirit empowers the preaching of the gospel to make dead and blind sinners alive and opens their eyes to the truth (Romans 10:8-21; 2 Corinthians 4:1-6; John 6:35-47, 59-65; John 3:1-21; Ezekiel 36:22-32; Deuteronomy 30:1-14; Matthew 3:2; Mark 1:14-15; John 3:36; Acts 2:37-39; Acts 10:44-48, 11:15-18; Acts 16:30-31; Romans 10:8-10).

Salvation Declared: Justification

Notes

There is a Great Exchange of our sin for Jesus' righteousness, resulting in the legal declaration of "righteous" from God (2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 4:1-8; Galatians 3).

Salvation's Foundation: Union with Christ

Notes

All human beings are under a representative head, either Adam or Jesus. As it goes with your head, it goes with you: all in Adam are failures and sinners and must die; all in Christ are accepted, beloved, and live (Zechariah 3; Romans 5:12-21; Romans 6:1-11).

Salvation in Progress: Sanctification

Notes

Sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming righteous, the very thing God has declared us to be in Christ. Paul states that we were elected before the foundation of the world to be "conformed to the image" of Jesus, and sanctification is the process of achieving that goal (Romans 8:29; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-3; 1 Peter 1:14-21; Romans 6:15-23; Romans 7:4-25).

Salvation's Future Hope:
Preservation and Perseverance

Notes

The hope that we have of the certainty of our salvation lies in the twin pillars of God's preservation of his people and his people's perseverance in the faith. God keeps his people, and by the power of the Spirit within them, they persevere to the end (John 6:37-40; John 10:24-30; Hebrews 6:9-11; Jude 24-25; John 17:9-26).

Salvation Finished: Glorification

Notes

When Jesus returns, everyone will be raised from the dead; those who have been justified will be fully and finally perfected in the image of Christ. Sin, death, and Satan will be destroyed, never to plague God's people again (Romans 8:29-30; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, 50-58; Revelation 7:15-17; Revelation 22:1-5).
